SOT Special Interest Group Spotlight: Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists

By Aline de Conti posted 09-16-2021 13:32

The Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists (HOT) was founded in 2004 and became an SOT Special Interest Group in 2006. The main goals of HOT are to contribute to the dissemination of toxicological information and issues as they relate to Ibero-American communities and to promote the careers and education of Hispanic/Latin/Brazilian/Portuguese/Spanish toxicologists in the United States and the international Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking scientific communities. HOT also provides support to SOT on its outreach in global toxicology.

To reach its goals, HOT organizes annual activities:

  • Quarterly publication of the Toxenlaces newsletter, which includes relevant toxicology topics, upcoming events and opportunities, career advice, and spotlights on member achievements
  • Webinars on cutting-edge toxicology topics or issues that are of interest to our members
  • Travel awards to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to attend the SOT Annual Meeting and a special award to recognize senior toxicologists
  • A mentoring seminar during the SOT Annual Meeting in which trainees have the opportunity to interact with more established toxicologists across sectors

In addition, HOT has a vast network of sister organizations across Latin America with which it shares information and opportunities. Our members also actively participate in other international and local toxicological societies. HOT is committed to giving its members greater visibility at the national level and is currently working to promote the inclusion of its members in SOT-elected positions and the national SOT Awards.

We welcome anyone who wants to belong to this growing community! More information about HOT and its activities can be found on the HOT website, or visit our Facebook page: #IamHOT. Please feel free to contact us via email with any questions.
