SOT is proud to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the fields of risk assessment, chemical regulation, and toxicological leadership through two prestigious awards: the Arnold J. Lehman Award and the Founders Award (for Outstanding Leadership in Toxicology). These awards celebrate the dedication and impact of those who have shaped safety evaluation and advanced the field of toxicology.

Arnold J. Lehman Award

The Arnold J. Lehman Award recognizes those who have made pivotal contributions to risk assessment and the regulation of chemical agents, including pharmaceuticals. This award is presented to individuals whose work—whether through rigorous scientific research or the application of sound principles—has significantly influenced the regulatory landscape. Recipients of this award are honored with a commemorative plaque during the SOT Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony, along with a cash stipend.

Founders Award (for Outstanding Leadership in Toxicology)

The Founders Award, supported by the SOT Endowment Fund, is reserved for Full, Emeritus, or Retired Full members of SOT who have exhibited exceptional leadership in promoting the role of toxicological sciences in safety decision-making. This award acknowledges those who have developed and applied innovative approaches to distinguish safe and unsafe levels of exposure to chemical and physical agents. This award includes a plaque, presented during the SOT Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony, and a cash stipend.

Making a Nomination

This is your opportunity to celebrate the achievements of individuals who have made a lasting impact on the fields of safety evaluation and toxicological leadership. Nominations for these awards should include a primary and a secondary letter of nomination from SOT Full members, outlining the nominee’s significant contributions in layman’s terms and detailing how they meet the award criteria. Strong nomination packages feature two distinct letters, providing comprehensive support for the candidate’s qualifications. Concise, specific, and descriptive letters are highly encouraged.

Nominees must also submit an up-to-date CV limited to 10 pages, emphasizing the most significant professional accomplishments relevant to the award. Awards Committee members will review only the first 10 pages, so including additional pages will not enhance the nomination.

The nomination deadline for both the Arnold J. Lehman Award and the Founders Award is October 9.

For more information on making a nomination, please review the “Awards Review Process and FAQs” web page of the SOT website. Please direct any inquiries to SOT Headquarters.

Please note that to ensure a diversity of nominees, there is a two-year grace period for SOT Awards. Preference will be given to nominees who have not received one of the following SOT Awards in the past two years: Achievement, Arnold J. Lehman, Distinguished Toxicology Scholar, Education, Enhancement of Animal Welfare, Founders, Leading Edge in Basic Science, Merit, Public Communications, Toxicologist Mentoring, Translational Impact, Translational/Bridging Travel, and Undergraduate Educator Awards.
