Sten P. Orrenius, PhD, MD, was born on Valentine’s Day in 1937 and passed away on April 27, 2020. Sten was a Professor Emeritus at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where he received his PhD and MD. He was an internationally recognized scientist and scholar. In addition to his numerous honorary doctorates from prestigious universities worldwide and his honorary memberships (in ASPET, ASBMB, and the Italian and Swedish Societies of Toxicology), he received the first ECDO Career Research Award for Excellence in Cell Death Research as well as the EUROTOX Merit Award. He was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies of Science (US).

For those of us that are SOT members, we knew Sten as the recipient of the 2006 SOT Distinguished Lifetime Toxicology Scholar Award and as an SOT Honorary member. Sten organized/chaired and spoke at several SOT Symposia and participated in Continuing Education courses and regular Platform Sessions. He also helped organize and introduce invited Medical Research Council speakers. We knew Sten as an advisor, confidant, friend, mentor, critical reviewer, and role model. We remember Sten for his intellect, insightfulness, integrity, and incisive and informative questions. His approachable and friendly manner was evident and appreciated by all as he generously gave his time to attentively listen to questions, whether it was in a one-on-one setting or in group discussions. We cherish the time we spent with Sten and the lasting memories from this considerate, kind, and magnificent scientist and gentleman.
