Looking for more educational programs and opportunities for undergraduate students considering a career in toxicology? We are currently accepting applications for the 2021 Virtual Undergraduate Diversity Program Student Award and the 2021 Perry J. Gehring Diversity Student Award. The deadline to submit an application or nomination for either award is October 26, 2020.

Undergraduate students are highly encouraged to apply for these opportunities, featured in this blog. We also encourage faculty to share these valuable opportunities with their students and encourage them to apply.

Undergraduate Diversity Program Student Award

Program participants networking with mentors, program volunteers, and organizers
during the 2020 Undergraduate Diversity Program.

The Undergraduate Diversity Program Student Award offers recognition and access to the Virtual Undergraduate Diversity Program during the 2021 SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo. Sophomores and juniors are preferred, and eligibility criteria include at least one of the following: students from diverse backgrounds, including groups underrepresented in the sciences; first-generation college attendees; or students from a primarily undergraduate institution that does not confer graduate degrees in biomedical disciplines.

If your student fits one of these criteria, we highly encourage their application for this unique opportunity.

For 31 years, more than 30 students have attended the SOT Annual Meeting and this undergraduate program each year thanks to your encouragement. As the Annual Meeting will be virtual this year, we are planning a series of interactive activities in which students will have the opportunity to engage and network with toxicology leaders from academia, industry, and government and discuss careers opportunities in biomedical research, regulatory sciences, and academia. We will present strategies for successful graduate school applications, explore the various toxicology career paths, and offer opportunities to interact with peers and mentors. Students also will have the opportunity to attend the Scientific Sessions and events of the 2021 SOT Annual Meeting.

More information on the student award and application materials is available on the “Undergraduate Diversity Program Student Awards” web page on the SOT website.

Also, more details on the various program activities can be found on the “Undergraduate Diversity Program” web page on the Annual Meeting website.

Perry J. Gehring Diversity Student Award

This award, funded through the SOT Endowment, will provide access and recognition during the Undergraduate Diversity Program for undergraduate and graduate students from underrepresented groups who were selected for the 2016–2020 Undergraduate Diversity Program and have abstracts accepted for 2021 SOT Annual Meeting. To apply or learn more, visit the “Perry J. Gehring Diversity Student Award” web page on the SOT website. More information on submitting an abstract is available on the 2021 Annual Meeting website. Please note: applicants must be 2016–2020 Undergraduate Diversity Program participants and have abstracts accepted for the 2021 Annual Meeting.

Now more than ever, SOT recognizes and emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusiveness in toxicology, especially during the early educational–career development formation of students from diverse backgrounds.

Please share this information with your students and encourage them to apply for these opportunities by October 26, 2020. We also encourage faculty to share these opportunities with their colleagues.

All undergraduate students interested in toxicology are also encouraged to join SOT as Undergraduate Student Affiliates today to receive early notice of undergraduate awards, graduate school opportunities, summer internships, and more!

Our faculty members are integral in identifying students who otherwise may not hear about the rewarding career opportunities in toxicology. We highly value and appreciate your efforts to keep promoting SOT awards for students. Please contact SOT Headquarters if you have any inquiries regarding this year’s Virtual Undergraduate Diversity Program or any of the opportunities promoted here.

Please visit the “SOT Awards & Funding” web page of the SOT website for more information about other SOT awards for undergraduate students.
