SOT Undergraduate Faculty Grant Applications Due April 7

By Katie Paul Friedman posted 03-16-2023 15:05

Faculty who primarily teach undergraduate students can receive a boost from SOT for faculty development or for supporting undergraduates in their research labs. The SOT Faculty United for Toxicology Undergraduate Recruitment and Education (FUTURE) Committee grants up to $1,500 funding to SOT members through two award programs that have application deadlines of April 7, 2023.

Faculty Research Grants

Undergraduate research is an important activity to achieve the SOT strategic goal of recruiting students to careers in toxicology. Three to five faculty grants will be awarded for training of undergraduate students through a toxicology-based research experience which can occur in the summer or throughout an academic year.

Faculty Development Grants

One or two grants will support undergraduate faculty development via an experience selected and justified by the applicant. This might include attendance of workshops at teaching and research-related institutes; examples are provided in the award description. The goal is to strengthen the skills of the toxicology faculty member and thus encourage participation of undergraduate students in toxicology or STEM fields. Note that funds must be spent during this fiscal year, which ends June 30, 2023.

To learn more about these awards and other SOT activities related to undergraduate education, attend the Undergraduate Educator Network meeting at 4:30 pm on Monday, March 20, in Nashville.

Recent recipients of these awards are featured in this blog. This support has increased research at Washington College, University of Mississippi, Swarthmore College, Elizabeth City State University, Fort Lewis College, University of Maine, and Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, among others. Reflections of Swarthmore students underscore the rewards of toxicology research and this program.

Questions can be directed to Betty Eidemiller at SOT.
