Letters to the US Senate and House Majority and Minority Leaders
Almost 1,100 organizations, including SOT, sent a letter on January 7, 2024, to the US Senate and House of Representatives majority and minority leaders expressing concern about possible cuts to the non-defense programs (often referred to as non-defense discretionary appropriations or simply “NDD”) for Fiscal Year 2024 in the absence of passage of a full-year continuing resolution.
On June 25, 2024, more than 1,100 organizations, including SOT, sent another letter to the US Senate and House majority and minority leaders asking Congress to reconsider funding levels for NDD programs for Fiscal Year 2025, as current drafts still contain cuts to NDD spending.
Friends of NICHD Letter Supporting a FY 2025 Funding Increase for NICHD
On April 1, SOT joined with the Friends of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in endorsing the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research Fiscal Year 2025 funding recommendation, which would provide the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with $51.3 billion in funding. The letter, signed by more than 35 organizations, also asks for an increase of funding for NICHD to $1.891 billion in FY 2025.
Letter to House Subcommittee Supporting FY 2025 Funding for the ECHO Program
In a letter to the US House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies of the Committee on Appropriations on June 24, 2024, SOT and 20 other organizations asked for the Subcommittee to provide $207 million in funding for the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program in the Fiscal Year 2025 in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies appropriations bills. The letter also encourages the transfer of the ECHO program from the Immediate Office of the NIH Director to the Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI) within the Office of the Director at NIH to allow for enhanced collaboration and scientific exchange.
Opposition to the Draft Fiscal Year 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) Appropriations Bill
On July 9, 2024, SOT and 222 other organizations submitted a letter to the US House Appropriations Committee expressing opposition to the Fiscal Year 2025 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) appropriations bill as currently written. The draft bill contains cuts to public health and biomedical research programs, including the NIH budget. Additionally, the bill includes a policy to restructure the NIH.
