Individuals (members or nonmembers) actively leading research focused on translating issues of toxicological concern to improve human health are eligible for the SOT Translational Impact Award and the SOT Translational/Bridging Travel Award.

The Translation Impact Award recognizes a scientist who, in the last 10 years, has made a significant contribution to translating basic toxicological research into outcomes that improve human or environmental health. Research that has been recognized through this award includes:

• The validation and application of a biomarker of brain injury and neuroinflammation called translocator protein 18 kDa (TSPO)
• The identification of how exposure to metals, such as inorganic arsenic and cadmium, can affect pregnant women, the placenta, and the fetus.
• The development of safe and effective treatment options after exposure to highly toxic agents, such as chemical weapons.

Please consider nominating deserving individual for this award or the Translational/Bridging Travel Award (see description that follows) by the October 9 deadline.

Translational Impact Award

The Translational Impact Award is presented to a scientist whose recent (last 10 years) outstanding clinical, environmental health, or translational research has improved human and/or public health in an area of toxicological concern. Scientists who are leaders in multidisciplinary team efforts that have contributed to alleviating toxicity-related health problems are particularly attractive candidates. The recipient of the Translational Impact Award is invited to deliver a lecture at the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo.

Translational/Bridging Travel Award

The Translational/Bridging Travel Award recognizes up to two mid- or senior-level scientists or clinicians with at least 10 years of postdoctoral research or clinical practice experience and who have an active research program or are currently active in the practice of clinical toxicology, medical toxicology, or disease prevention or in the application of translational toxicology. This award helps fund travel to the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo and includes a complimentary registration.

Making a Nomination

The nomination deadline for SOT Awards is October 9. Nominations for either award should include both a primary and a secondary letter of nomination from Full members of the Society that provide in layman’s terms an analysis of the nominee’s significant contributions and how they apply to the award criteria. The strongest nomination packages include two letters that are distinct from one another to offer more detailed support of the candidate’s qualifications. Letters of nomination should be specific and descriptive while remaining concise. The Awards Committee will review only the two letters required to complete the nomination; no additional letters will be considered.

Nominations also should include the nominee’s up-to-date CV that is limited to 10 pages in length; it should highlight the candidate’s most significant professional accomplishments as they relate to the criteria for the award. Awards Committee members are required to review only 10 pages of each CV, so submitting a longer CV does not strengthen an award nomination.

Preference will be given to nominees who have not received one of the following SOT awards in the past two years: Achievement, Arnold J. Lehman, Distinguished Toxicology Scholar, Education, Enhancement of Animal Welfare, Founders, Leading Edge in Basic Science, Merit, Public Communications, Toxicologist Mentoring, Translational Impact, Translational/Bridging Travel, and Undergraduate Educator Awards.
