Regulation and Policy Update: SOT Signs Letters Urging Funding Support for the NICHD and Large Animal Research

By Michael Aschner posted 06-30-2022 13:28

In a Friends of NICHD letter to the leadership of the US Senate and House Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Education, and Related Agencies Services, the member organizations, which include SOT, urge the Subcommittees to increase the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) funding to $1.816 billion for FY2023. This funding increase request is proportionate to the increase in National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding requested for FY2023 in an Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research recommendation that SOT co-signed on May 10, 2022. The full Friends of NICHD letter that was submitted on May 23, 2022, is available on the SOT website.

In a separate letter to the leadership of the US House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Education, and Related Agencies Services on June 13, 2022, SOT and 45 co-signatories requested that the Subcommittee include language in the FY2023 Appropriations Bill that would support and expand large animal foundational and translational research supported by the NIH. The letter also asks for additional funding for the NIH and National Primate Research Centers and for the Subcommittee to include language that would support the formation of an interagency committee to oversee nonhuman primate research needs. The letter recommends additional items associated with large animal research, and you can read these recommendations in the full letter on the SOT website.
