In Memoriam: Jerry Hook

By Suzanne Fitzpatrick posted 01-14-2021 16:41

SOT has learned that SOT Emeritus member and Past President Jerry Hook passed away on January 9, 2021. Dr. Hook was widely admired in the toxicology community for his valued contributions to the field.

Dr. Hook received his PhD from the University of Iowa Department of Pharmacology in 1966 and enjoyed a prolific career at Michigan State University, GlaxoSmithKline, and Lexin Pharmaceuticals. His primary areas of interest were drug discovery toxicology and renal toxicology. In his retirement, Dr. Hook continued to be an active contributor to the sciences through service on journal editorial boards and consulting with emerging biotech companies.

Dr. Hook was the 1987–1988 SOT President. During his term, Dr. Hook was instrumental in furthering the involvement of women toxicologists in the Society through specific efforts to ensure that all appointed Committees included women members. During the 1988 SOT Annual Meeting, the first meeting of Women in Toxicology was held under Dr. Hook’s auspices. In addition to his contributions to the Society as President, Dr. Hook and his wife and fellow SOT member, Dr. Jacqueline H. Smith, also were the first two individuals to reach Paracelsus Circle Visionary status—the highest level of giving—for their individual contributions to the SOT Endowment Fund. Of his participation in the Endowment, Dr. Hook said that he hoped to “create a situation where SOT Council could support an innovative idea faster and with more impact than waiting for traditional funding agencies to react.”

The Society extends condolences to Dr. Smith and the Hook family. For more details, please refer to Dr. Hook’s obituary.
