If you are planning on attending the 2024 SACNAS National Diversity in STEM Conference (NDiSTEM) in October or the 2024 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) in November, please let us know! The SOT Inclusion, Diversity, and Engagement Committee (IDEC) is looking for SOT members to help spread information and encourage interest in the science of toxicology, toxicology careers, and SOT, as well as promote student award opportunities, at these conferences.
SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science) works to make sure that those most underrepresented in STEM have the support they need to attain advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership. The annual NDiSTEM Conference is a multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM diversity event that equips, empowers, and energizes participants for their academic and professional paths in STEM. This year’s NDiSTEM Conference will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, October 31–November 2.
ABRCMS, managed by the American Society for Microbiology, was founded to encourage minority, first-generation, veteran, and disabled students to pursue higher education in STEM. For over 20 years, it has been a key conference for underrepresented community college, undergraduate, and postbaccalaureate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This year’s ABRCMS will take place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, November 13–16.
There are a variety of ways that SOT members can help to promote toxicology at these conferences:
- If you are presenting at either conference, SOT can provide you with a slide to add to your presentation about the Society’s opportunities for students.
- You can volunteer to serve as a mentor at NDiSTEM or as a judge or abstract reviewer at ABRCMS.
- If you will be attending one of the conferences, SOT can mail you copies of a student opportunities flyer to share at the conferences and e-mail an electronic copy of talking points about opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in toxicology.
SOT is continuing to pause exhibiting at NDiSTEM and ABRCMS for 2024, so we are looking to connect with SOT members to help to continue to have a toxicology presence at these conferences. If you are planning to attend either conference, please contact the SOT IDEC staff liaison, Jenna Pelsey.
