Chaired by Society of Toxicology (SOT) Postdoctoral Assembly (PDA) Board Members, Gurjot Kaur, Marianna Stamou, and David Faulkner

In many ways, the practice of assessing risk is a core tenet of toxicology–how much is too much? What happens when that threshold is reached? If it’s surpassed? In some cases, the outcome of a risk assessment is not simply a yes-or-no answer, but rather, a quantitative threshold, or a risk/benefit analysis. These outcomes are often used for safeguarding human health by setting quantitative thresholds on exposure to environmental chemicals. Similarly, in the development of new drugs to treat human disease, prediction, identification, and mitigation of potential toxic effects are of paramount importance when designing safer pharmaceuticals.

As concerns over the number of chemicals in the environment rise and pharmaceutical companies reinforce their commitments to developing safer drugs, opportunities for a career in risk assessment are becoming more available (and desirable) to early career toxicologists. However, many young toxicologists are only tangentially familiar with what a career in this field involves and what it takes to be successful. This webinar offers a peek into the daily lives of toxicologists working in risk assessment by bringing together four toxicologists from the academic, government, and industrial sectors. The presenters will discuss how one becomes a risk assessor, what is required to obtain expertise in this field, and what benefits can be expected from the work. The SOT PDA Executive Board invites all SOT postdocs and graduate students to join us for this exciting webinar on careers in risk assessment. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with the speakers during a Q&A session after the speakers have presented.

Speakers:

  • John Paul Gosling (Associate Professor, University of Leeds, UK)
  • Maureen Gwinn (Senior Science Advisor, US Environmental Protection Agency, USA)
  • Mikael Persson (Principal Scientist, AstraZeneca, Sweden)
  • John Wambaugh (Physical Scientist, US Environmental Protection Agency, USA)
