More than 6,100 scientists participated in the SOT 57th Annual Meeting and ToxExpo, held March 11‒15, 2018, in San Antonio, Texas. Scientists traveled from Europe, Africa, Asia, Canada, and every corner of the United States to participate in the largest toxicological meeting in the world, where groundbreaking, basic, and applied science was presented and discussed.

Opening Plenary Speaker Matthew H. Porteus, Stanford University, provided a look at the next wave of toxicological research and understanding as he addressed, “Developing Genome-Edited Stem Cells for Therapy of Patients: Assessing Efficacy and Toxicology.” His presentation focused on genetically-engineered cell-based therapeutics that require different approaches to evaluate safety and toxicology. [Editor’s Note: Read the reflections of SOT member Carla Garza Lombo on Dr. Porteus’s lecture.] Many of the 170-plus Scientific Sessions, including 2,500 poster presentations, and 14 Continuing Education courses provided a look at the future of translational research and its applications.

The meeting continues to evolve ensuring that participants can discover all the advances in toxicology from the past year and can forge relationships to progress the science in the coming year. Thank you for joining us in San Antonio for another great meeting.

One of the enhancements to the 2018 Annual Meeting was the introduction of the all-day Poster Sessions to provide more opportunity for in-depth exchanges. The Annual Meeting survey provides you with the opportunity to respond to this innovation, as well as to the diverse range of activities for scientists at every career stage.

The meeting program included many opportunities for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars to engage in peer-to-peer and mentoring activities, such as the Undergraduate Diversity Program, Undergraduate Education Program, SOT Mentoring Breakfast, and more. These networking opportunities can establish connections that will extend across the arch of careers.

ToxExpo featured 318 exhibiting companies from around the globe. In addition, 70 Exhibitor-Hosted Sessions were held on a wide range of topics. As a reminder, the resources of ToxExpo are available 24/7, 365 days a year.

The Society is grateful for the generous contributions of the 40 diverse organizations that provided support for this excellent meeting. Thank you to all who participated in this year’s meeting, and SOT looks forward to seeing you in Baltimore, Maryland, March 10‒14, 2019.
