Ofelia Olivero Receives SACNAS 2018 Distinguished Mentor Award

Ofelia.jpgA dedicated Society of Toxicology (SOT) member since 2004, Ofelia Olivero, PhD, ATS, was awarded the 2018 Distinguished Mentor Award by the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). Dr. Olivero is Chief, Intramural Diversity Workforce Branch, National Cancer Institute. A description of her accomplishments and previous awards recognizing her commitment to mentorship and diversity are posted on the SACNAS website.

Among her many SOT activities, Dr. Olivero is a member of the SOT Women in Toxicology and Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists Special Interest Groups in which she has provided mentorship to many. Moreover, she has served as the Chair of the Committee on Diversity Initiatives (CDI), which oversees the SOT Undergraduate Diversity Program held in conjunction with the SOT Annual Meeting. This program is celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2019.  

She now is the Chair of the SOT Mentoring Task Force that is exploring other avenues for encouraging the next generation of toxicologists by building on the successes of the CDI programs, Mentoring Breakfast, Mentor Match, and other networking opportunities provided during the SOT Annual Meeting and throughout the year.
