Funding Available for Graduate Students to Enhance Career Preparation

SOT is among the groups focusing attention on assuring graduate training experiences include activities complementing preparation for academic lab research and teaching (SOT Education Summit, NIH Support for the Biomedical Workforce). This spring the SOT Education Committee and Graduate Education Subcommittee are offering the Supplemental Training for Education Program (STEP). The STEP pilot program will provide approximately three awards of $500 each to enable outstanding doctoral students to pursue training in identified areas of professional/scientific development deemed necessary for them to achieve their career goals, but outside the immediate scope of their graduate training and research program.

For example, activities similar to those that might be proposed include:

  • Professional Development Courses Geared Toward Government-Based Specialties
  • Writing Skill Enhancement
  • PK Training
  • Statistical and Software Training
  • Grant Writing and Management Opportunities
  • Risk Assessment Skill Development

The NIH Regional Seminars on Program Funding and Grants Administration that will be in Baltimore, Maryland, June 25–27, 2014, is one such opportunity. The STEP program description, application, and other development examples are found on the Supplemental Training Education Program page.

Application Deadline is April 30.
