The SOT CCT meeting “Ocular Toxicology, Pharmacology, and Drug Delivery: An Eye on the Future” was held on the Genentech campus in South San Francisco on June 27‒28, 2016. The meeting was a great success, with 165 attendees, 22 sponsors, and 23 speakers.
Ocular toxicology—the field of toxicology concerned with the eyes and the visual system—has become a vital component of drug development, with just as much interest aimed at drugs that target afflictions of the eye, as detecting drugs with off-target effects in the visual system.
Nigel Walker (NIEHS-NTP) gave a great overview, highlighting some of the general concerns with nanomaterials. One interesting point he made was that it may not be appropriate to measure the dose of a drug delivered by a nanomaterial by mass as we typically measure dose (mg/kg).
