2023 Undergraduate Diversity Program icebreaker activity
The SOT Committee on Diversity Initiatives (CDI) is excited to host the 35th Annual SOT Undergraduate Diversity Program (UDP) this year in Salt Lake City, Utah, March 9–11. Promising undergraduate students interested in research careers and from diverse backgrounds and institutions underserved in the sciences are selected to attend the program to learn about the field of toxicology and be encouraged to pursue careers in the biomedical sciences.
The CDI will host 30 exceptional students and five advisors from 23 different institutions for the three-day program. In addition to attending Annual Meeting sessions, participants in the UDP engage in presentations and case studies across the breadth of toxicology, discover education and career opportunities in the field, and learn about the requirements for graduate school and a research career. This year’s presenters represent a diversity of backgrounds and will include SOT members Marquea King, Matthew Campen, Alexandra Noël, Troy Roepke, and Betina Lew. Vanessa Fitsanakis will lead the students in an interactive case study titled “Forensic Analysis Using Toxicology: Beyond the Hocus-Pocus of CSI.”
On Sunday, March 10, all undergraduates who are registered for the Annual Meeting are invited to join the Undergraduate Education Program. Preregistration is required. The SOT Undergraduate Research Award recipients and students from the NIH-funded mentoring program ToxMSDT in which SOT partners are among the participants.
CDI is grateful for the many dedicated volunteers—Committee members, presenters, toxicologist host mentors, student/postdoctoral peer mentors, faculty and research mentors, and others—who give their time so generously to support the program and inspire the next generation of young scientists. All SOT members are invited to the CDI Reunion at the SOT Annual Meeting, which brings together current Undergraduate Diversity Program participants, past participants, program volunteers, and supporters.
