SOT member Silvia Berlanga de Moraes Barros, PharmD, PhD, received the 2024 International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX) Lifetime Achievement Award during the IUTOX-supported 12th Congress of Toxicology in Developing Countries (CTDC) last week. Dr. Barros was nominated for this award by SOT and the Spanish Association of Toxicology (AETOX). A special thank you goes to the SOT Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists (HOT) Special Interest Group for recommending Dr. Barros to SOT Council and assisting with the nomination letter.

To quote from the SOT nomination letter, “Professor Silvia Barros is a role model for the younger generation of toxicologists in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Her entire career focused on developing the field of toxicology, particularly in developing countries. Professor Barros’s leadership and mentoring is broadly recognized in Latin America, where she had the opportunity to be a teacher, scientist, and guide for young and mid-career toxicologists.” SOT previously recognized Dr. Barros for her contributions to education and mentorship by awarding her the 2022 SOT Education Award.

Throughout her career, Dr. Barros has been actively engaged in numerous national and international professional and scientific societies, including SOT, the Brazilian Society of Toxicology, and IUTOX. She has served on the SOT Membership Committee and as President of HOT and on the IUTOX Executive Committee for four three-year terms (2004–2010 and 2016–2022).

SOT congratulates Dr. Barros on this recognition of her outstanding achievements. We are proud to note that the two previous IUTOX Lifetime Achievement Award recipients, Ali Esat Karakaya, PhD, ATS, and Mary Gulumian, PhD, also are SOT members.
