Each year, the Graduate Student Travel Support award funds travel to the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo for outstanding graduate students presenting research during the meeting. As the Annual Meeting shifted to a virtual format for 2021, these young researchers still received support to attend and participate in the meeting. Eleven students used this funding to cover early-bird registration for the Virtual Annual Meeting and early-bird fees for two Continuing Education courses.

One such student recipient was Chittaranjan Sahu, MS, a PhD candidate at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Mohali, India. Mr. Sahu shares his experience in receiving this award:

Chittaranjan Sahu, MS

“I am Chittaranjan Sahu, a PhD student in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, NIPER, Mohali, India. I am pursuing my doctoral degree in the research area of food contaminants, disease-associated male reproductive toxicity, and the influence of various trace elements like zinc and selenium. The research work presented during SOT 2021 is focused on exploring the influence of nutritional deficiency and food contaminants on male reproductive dysfunction and germ cell toxicity. Primarily, my dissertation has been evaluating the risk and negative impact of dietary insufficiency on health outcomes in the disease condition as well as food contaminant/toxicant exposure in reproductive age. Further, I also completed several studies on the role of zinc and selenium in a diabetic and toxicant-exposed rat germ cell. The multiple roles of zinc and the consequences of its dietary deficiency associated with male infertility risk were examined. Additionally, bisphenol A exhibits a xenoestrogenic effect on germ cells, which may enhance the male infertility risk.

“I would like to thank SOT for this award. It was my honor to receive the Graduate Student Support award for the Virtual 2021 SOT Annual Meeting. First, I was surprised, and then I felt humbled to be a recipient of the Graduate Student Support award for 2021. This award will encourage me to be actively involved in future programs of SOT and motivate me to work more in the area of toxicology. I am grateful for these virtual opportunities by SOT, which have shaped graduates like me. I would like to express my heartiest gratitude to the SOT Awards Committee for successful completion of the 2021 SOT awards event in a virtual mode. Also, I extend my sincere thanks to my research supervisor, Dr. G.B. Jena, who always cheered, guided, and motivated me to work harder.”

A recorded presentation of Dr. Sahu’s research is on the Virtual Meeting Platform through May 31.

Congratulations to all the 2021 Graduate Student Support recipients! SOT supports many awards for graduate students, with deadlines throughout the year. For more information on SOT Awards, visit the SOT website.
