SOT Will Host the 34th Undergraduate Diversity Program in Nashville

By Karilyn Sant posted 03-09-2023 15:29

The SOT Committee on Diversity Initiatives (CDI) will hold the 34th Annual SOT Undergraduate Diversity Program (UDP) this year in Nashville, March 18–20. Promising undergraduate students interested in research careers and from diverse backgrounds and institutions underserved in the sciences are selected to attend the program to learn about the field of toxicology and be encouraged to pursue careers in the biomedical sciences.

The CDI will host 30 exceptional students and three advisors from 23 different institutions from across the US for the three-day program. In addition to attending SOT Annual Meeting sessions, participants in the UDP engage in presentations and case studies across the breadth of toxicology, discover education and career opportunities in the field, and learn more about the requirements for graduate school and a research career. This year’s presenters will include Daniel Acosta, Antonio Baines, José Manautou, Alexandra Noël, and Phoebe Stapleton. Dana Haine, Elise Hickman, and Ilona Jaspers will lead the students in an interactive case study titled “Evaluating the Effects of Flavored Electronic Cigarettes on the Respiratory Immune System.”

It takes a tremendous effort every year from the dedicated volunteers—Committee members, presenters, toxicologist host mentors, student/postdoctoral peer mentors, faculty and research mentors, and others—who give their time so generously to support the program and inspire the next generation of young scientists. Their efforts are greatly appreciated.

All SOT members are invited to attend the CDI Reunion, taking place Saturday, March 18, at 7:30 pm during the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo. This event brings together current Undergraduate Diversity Program participants, past participants, program volunteers, and supporters.
