This blog was prepared by and is being shared on behalf of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) as part of a blog exchange between SETAC and SOT.

SETAC extends a warm invitation to members from SOT to attend the SETAC North America 45th Annual Meeting, which will be held from October 20–24, 2024, in Fort Worth, Texas.

The meeting has a robust scientific program containing a variety of sessions. The meeting will span five days and includes 10 parallel oral sessions a day, poster sessions, plenty of engaging networking opportunities, and much more. More than 2,000 participants are expected from academia, business, government, and nongovernmental organizations.

Nicole Kleinstreuer, SOT member and Director of the National Toxicology Program Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods, is delivering a plenary address on the hottest topic across all research areas: “Artificial Intelligence for Toxicology and Beyond: Revolutionizing Risk Assessment.” The meeting will also feature author and plenary speaker Emily Monosson, who will explore how chemicals elicit evolutionary responses in species, and documentary filmmaker Ben Masters.

The stage is set, and SETAC is excited to share the list of sessions with you. To make it easier to review, here are the topics that SOT members may find intriguing:

New Approach Methodologies

  • Cell-Based Approaches for Ecotoxicity Assessments
  • Unveiling Chemical Similarity in Computational Toxicology: Navigating Supervised and Unsupervised Approaches
  • Not Just Another NAM: Integrated, Intelligent, and Iterative Approaches to Ecological Risk Assessment
  • Distinguishing Mode-of-Action-Specific Toxicity from Nonspecific Effects: An Endocrine Disruption Conundrum
  • Case Studies Using Molecular Tools and New Approach Methodologies for Assessing Toxicity in Non-model Species
  • Linking Molecular Impacts to Organism Health: Empirical and Theoretical Methods to Scale Contaminant Effects

’Omics

  • Identifying and Linking Environmental Exposure to Biological Effects
  • ’Omics Approaches for Assessing Chemical Hazard and Toxicological Response
  • Multi-’omics Applications in Systems Toxicology
  • Integrating Multiple Endpoints to Support ’omics-Based Research for Ecotoxicology
  • ’Omics beyond Transcriptomics: Leveraging Proteomics and Metabolomics to Improve Mechanistic Understanding of Responses to Environmental Stressors

Human Health Risk Assessment

  • The Intersection of Human Health and Environmental Risk Assessment: A One-Health Perspective
  • Agriculture and One Health: Toxicology and Ecological Health Risk Assessment of Metals, Pesticides, and Other Agricultural Inputs
  • Point-of-Use Drinking Water Exposome and Potential Human Health Effects
  • So Now What? Human Health and Aquatic Life Benchmarks, Development, and Use
  • Overcoming Risk Communication Challenges: Strategies to Create Real Behavior Change for Better Communication Community-Based Participatory Research

Learning about new scientific endeavors and networking with colleagues can spark innovative and novel ideas that can shape future research projects, collaborations, and careers. So please join SETAC in the fascinating state of Texas! Submit an abstract by 5:00 pm (US PDT, UTC -7) on May 15 for no fee or May 22 for a $50 rush fee. Registration for the meeting will open on June 20.
