Brian S. Cummings, PhD, has been elected to serve as the 2022–2023 SOT Treasurer-Elect. Dr. Cummings is currently the Dean of the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Wayne State University. Before serving in this capacity, he was the Department Head of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences in the College of Pharmacy at the University of Georgia, where he also directed the Interdisciplinary Toxicology Program for seven years. Dr. Cummings is actively involved in the scientific community; he is the Past Chair of the Toxicology Division of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and as served as Chair or Co-Chair of several Department of Defense and National Institutes of Health Study Sections.

Since joining SOT in 1997, Dr. Cummings has contributed to the Society in a number of capacities, most recently as the 2020–2021 SOT Awards Committee Chair. He also has served as an Associate Editor of Toxicological Sciences since 2014 and is the Past President of the Southeastern Regional Chapter and Mechanisms Specialty Section, and a past Councilor of the In Vitro and Alternative Methods Specialty Section.

Of his goals for SOT, Dr. Cummings says, “My primary goal will be to work to ensure financial stability and growth of SOT during what is hopefully a recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. An alternative goal may be to aid SOT in budgeting during what may be a surge. While growth is a primary goal of SOT, as well as mine, this is a critical time in the history of SOT. The current world conditions means that a significant transformation may be needed in how our activities are organized and disseminated—for example, changes in our Annual Meeting format to accommodate hybrid and online content (regardless of world conditions), which will require analysis of finances to ensure delivery of our science at an affordable cost to our members, especially our trainees (another goal of mine). Additionally, we must continue to work with our Specialty Sections and Regional Chapters to aid them in providing their programing. My final goal is to continue the Society’s efforts in making our programs diverse and inclusive.”
