Undergraduate faculty and those interested in undergraduate learning may support SOT activities by contributing their expertise through two opportunities, with dates in November and continuing.

SOT NCABR Toxicology Curriculum Discussion

The next session in the SOT NCABR Undergraduate Toxicology Curriculum Webinar Series is November 22 at 12:00 noon (ET). The series of seven webinars is a discussion of how to employ the SOT Toxicology Learning Framework in undergraduate toxicology and a variety of other courses. Participants are encouraged to contribute how these concepts are taught in their courses.

This month’s topic is “Toxicology Core Concept: Pathways and Transformations of Energy and Matter.” During the webinar, the “interaction of toxicants with organisms described through paradigms in dose response, ADME, and toxico-/pharmacokinetics” will be discussed, with guest facilitator Kristine Willett. Joshua Gray and Mindy Reynolds co-facilitate the series. Register by November 19 to participate.

ToxMSDT Module Development

There is still time to indicate your interest in participating in the Toxicology Mentoring and Skills Development Training (ToxMSDT) content development team—the deadline is November 12. Those who would like to assist with a specific module can step up by December 1. Indicate your interests using the ToxMSDT Module Interest Form.

Members of the ToxMSDT content development team will receive a stipend of $2,000 per year of participation. This three-member group will define the parameters for the content of the new modules, including content and scope for each module, as well as guide the revision of the existing modules. Educators and those interested in the education of undergraduates will assist in (1) the development of 10 new modules to provide toxicology content to undergraduates and (2) the enhancement of six existing learning modules with active learning elements by project completion in 2025. Those selected for the module development teams will receive a $1,500 stipend per new module developed and a $500 stipend per module reviewed and updated. Module content will be developed using a One Health approach and the SOT Toxicology Learning Framework.

ToxMSDT is a five-year project funded by the National Institutes of Health to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups on the pathway to careers in toxicology and the biomedical sciences. Each year, a cohort of students engages in mentoring, career development, and toxicology training activities. The project is based at the University of California Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, with SOT and five other institutions participating in the collaboration. The toxicology modules are part of the training for the students but also are a curated resource freely available 24-7 for anyone to use in independent study or in formal undergraduate toxicology instruction.
