Recently, SOT Council wrapped up a nearly year-long process that involved looking at the current SOT programs and initiatives, hosting focus groups with SOT members, and conducting interviews with SOT members, to complete a new Strategic Plan for the Society.
This plan will guide the Society through 2027 and can be viewed in its entirety through an explanatory video or PDF that are available on the SOT website.
In the first year of the new Strategic Plan, SOT Council has elected to focus on four objectives:
- Proactively pursue impactful scientific content.
- Provide mentoring and networking opportunities for all career levels.
- Enhance awareness and utilization of SOT communications and resources.
- Support the success of Component Groups.
By prioritizing these objectives, SOT will establish a strong foundation for addressing the remaining objectives both in the first year and beyond.
Some of the tactics, programs, and changes that will occur in Year 1 in support of the four focus objectives include:
- Developing new formats for Annual Meeting Scientific Sessions, such as discussion-based sessions
- Examining SOT communication platforms, designs, frequency, etc., to enhance how SOT shares information with members and others
- Increasing networking time during the Annual Meeting
- Providing guidance and mentoring to first-time Annual Meeting attendees
- Reimagining SOT programming to fulfill a wider range of mentoring needs, such as training for mentors and tips and tools geared toward diverse career stages (early, middle, and late)
- Reconfiguring three existing Committees into three new Committees based around key functions and priorities:
- Career Advancement, Mentoring, and Networking Committee
- Education and Experiential Opportunities Committee
- Inclusion, Diversity, and Engagement Committee
If you’d like to share feedback regarding the Strategic Plan, I encourage you to reach out to any member of Council and/or attend the SOT Business Meeting on Tuesday, March 12, at 4:45 pm during the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo in Salt Lake City.
