As part of its community memberships and affiliations with other organizations, SOT is often approached to co-sign letters to government agencies to solicit support for scientific research through funding initiatives. SOT recently signed two such letters.
On November 15, 2021, a letter developed by the Ad Hoc Group for Medical Research was sent to the leaders of the US Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Appropriations. The letter urged the Committees to approve at least $46.3 billion for the NIH base as part of the FY2022 spending package so that “the nation can continue to accelerate the development of life-changing cures, pioneering treatments and diagnostics, and innovative preventive strategies.” SOT was one of 314 co-signers of the letter.
More than 30 organizations, including SOT, showed support for the new Department of Health and Human Service (HHS) Office of Climate Change and Health Equity (OCCHE) by submitting a letter to the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Appropriations asking for the completion of the FY2022 appropriations process that includes $6 million in funding for the OCCHE. In the letter, drafted by the American Geophysical Union, the co-signers ask the recipients to ensure “that HHS’s Office of Climate Change and Health Equity receives $6 million in
Fiscal Year 2022, to help address the effect of climate change on the American people.”
