SOT Announces Merit, Distinguished Toxicology Scholar, and Translational Impact Award Lectures

The Society of Toxicology honors scientific leaders annually with awards and with invitations to speak at the Society’s Annual Meeting and ToxExpo. This year the Society is pleased to announce our 2015 Award Lectures:

  • Jeff Burgess, MD, MS, MPH, Associate Dean for Research and Professor at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, is being recognized with the 2015 SOT Translational Impact Award. This award is given to a scientist whose outstanding clinical, environmental health, or translational research has improved public health in an area of toxicological concern within the last ten years. Dr. Burgess’ work focuses on reducing toxic exposures and preventing injuries among miners as well as firefighters and other first responders. Dr. Burgess will deliver the Translational Impact Award Lecture on Tuesday, March 24, 2014 at 8:00 am.
     
  • Ian Kimber, OBE, PhD, FSB, FBTS, ATS, Professor of Toxicology with Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Manchester, United Kingdom, is receiving the 2015 SOT Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award. This award is bestowed on an SOT member who has made substantial and seminal scientific contributions to the understanding of the science of toxicology. Dr. Kimber’s research focuses on the interface between toxicology and immunology with a specific interest in chemical and protein allergens. Dr. Kimber will deliver the Distinguished Toxicology Scholar Award Lecture on Wednesday, March 25, at 12:30 pm.
     
  • Gunter Oberdorster, DVM, PhD, Professor Emeritus with the Department of Environmental Medicine, University of Rochester Medical Center, is being honored with the 2015 SOT Merit Award. This honor is awarded to an SOT member who has made distinguished contributions to toxicology throughout an entire career. Dr. Oberdorster’s interests lie in the examination of the health effects of airborne particles when inhaled. Dr. Oberdorster will deliver the Merit Award Lecture on Monday, March 23 at 12:30 pm.

Additional recipients of 2015 SOT Awards, including more top scientists, educators, and students, will be announced throughout the rest of the week.
