The Society of Toxicology (SOT) has been dedicated to recognizing exceptional members with the Merit Award for more than 45 years. The SOT Merit Award is presented to a member of the Society who has distinguished him- or herself from among their peers through a lifetime of contributions to the field of Toxicology, specifically in the areas of research, teaching, regulatory activities, consulting, and service to the Society.
The 2016 Merit award recipient was Melvin E. Andersen. He first transformed the field of toxicology by introducing physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling. Other long-term interests are in developing biologically realistic models of the uptake, distribution, metabolism, and biological effects of drugs and toxic chemicals and applying these models in safety assessments and quantitative health risk assessments.

Similar to many other SOT Awards, nominations for the Merit Award should include the nominee’s abbreviated CV and both a primary and seconding letter of nomination from Full Members of the Society that include documentation and description of the significant contributions to toxicology by the nominee and how these achievements apply to the award criteria.
If you know a colleague deserving of this recognition, please begin the nomination process today by visiting the SOT Awards website! Nominations are accepted through October 9, 2016! As noted above, nominations can be made for scientists who have made significant contributions to toxicology in the areas of research, teaching, regulatory activities, consulting, and service to the Society. This award will be presented at the 2017 SOT Awards Ceremony, and the recipient of this award will be invited to deliver the Merit Award Lecture at the 2017 Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland.
