Dr. Goering received this award in recognition of his “sustained contributions and exemplary leadership in toxicology to improve the safety assessment of US FDA-regulated products.” Recognized as an international expert in toxicology, his laboratory research, consensus standards efforts, and pre- and post-market involvement have contributed significantly toward improving toxicity test methods, experimental protocols, and standards for the toxicological evaluation of medical devices and of emerging technologies, such as nanotechnology. These endeavors led to safer medical products reaching the market.

Moreover, Dr. Goering also was recognized for his commitment to teaching and training within and outside the agency. He is an Adjunct Professor, Program in Toxicology, University of Maryland at Baltimore and an Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, The George Washington University, Washington, DC.

He has been a scientist at the US FDA for 31 years and currently is Senior Biomedical Research Scientist and Deputy Director, Division of Biology, Chemistry and Materials Science, Office of Science and Engineering Laboratories, Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
