SOT Presents Landmarks Award to Herbert Needleman for Work in Eliminating Lead Poisoning in Children

SOT presented Dr. Herbert L. Needleman the SOT Landmarks Presentation Award for his seminal research on the neuro-developmental damage caused by lead poisoning. His son, Dr. Samuel Needleman, graciously accepted the award during the Awards Presentation last evening. Dr. Needleman played an important role in environmental health protections during the twentieth century, including the elimination of lead in gasoline and the issuance of guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the diagnosis and management of lead poisoning in children. His work convinced the Department of Housing and Urban Development to remove lead from thousands of housing units in the US. He also designed one of the first studies of lead exposure during gestation that demonstrated that such exposure is associated with cognitive deficit later in life.
