Dr. Portier to Retire From CDC

Christopher Portier, Director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Center for Environmental Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR), has announced his retirement effective March 29, 2013. Since 2010, Dr. Portier has led the CDC’s efforts to promote healthy, safe environments, and prevent harmful exposures. 

Before coming to CDC, Dr. Portier held a number of leadership positions with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), including Associate Director, Senior Advisor to the Director, and Director of NIEHS’ Environmental Toxicology Program. He has led many risk assessments, including the first comprehensive review of electromagnetic fields. Graduating from the University of North Carolina with a doctorate in biostatistics, he has received numerous awards and authored more than 180 peer-reviewed publications, 30 book chapters, and 40 technical reports.
