2016 SOT Arnold J. Lehman Award Presented to Alan Boobis

Alan Boobis, OBE, PhD, is the recipient of the 2016 SOT Arnold J. Lehman Award. Dr. Boobis received his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Glasgow. Currently, he is a Professor of Biochemical Pharmacology in the Centre for Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Division of Experimental Medicine, Department of Medicine as well as the Director of the Public Health England Toxicology Unit at Imperial College London.

Alan Boobis is honored for advancing risk assessment

For his exemplary career, Dr. Boobis has become recognized internationally for his contributions to the science and practice of Toxicology, dose response modeling, and human health risk assessment. He has played a key role in furthering the field of risk assessment scientifically, having led the development and advancement of incorporating pharmacokinetic and mechanistic knowledge into risk assessment, thus becoming the standard.

His contributions to the World Health Organization (WHO) International Programme on Chemical Safety project over several years led to a Mode of Action Human Relevance Framework that is in use by many federal agencies as the standard for risk assessment of individual chemicals around the world. He has long served as a member and Chair of the Joint Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO)/WHO Meeting on Pesticide Residues (JMPR) and of their Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA, residues of veterinary drugs). Such is his dedication to pesticide evaluations and assessments, and through the application of the latest science in this endeavor, he was the recipient of the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2003.

Throughout his career spanning four decades, Dr. Boobis has published more than 200 original papers on metabolism, carcinogenesis, mechanisms of toxicity, and improved testing strategies. As an SOT member, he is frequently an invited speaker to the SOT Annual Meeting. For his significant achievements and recognition in advancing the scientific basis of risk assessment, he is the recipient of many international awards and honors and serves on numerous grant review committees and academic and expert advisory committees.
