The SOT Southern California Regional Chapter and the Toxicology Education Foundation sponsored two public outreach programs in conjunction with the SOT Annual  Meeting that were met with great acclaim. On Saturday, OASIS, a national lifelong learning program hosted a toxicology course at their San Diego headquarters at Macy’s Mission Valley. Five speakers (Phil Wexler, Ann de Peyster, Teresa Todd-Butera, Chris Stransky, and Vince Torti) covered topics including history and fundamentals of toxicology, clinical toxicology, ecotoxicology, and pharmaceutical development. The course, scheduled for 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, did not adjourn until almost 2:00 pm thanks to an enthusiastic and inquisitive audience. On Monday evening, the RH Fleet Science Center hosted a toxicology program at Callahan’s Pub and Brewery in Mira Mesa as part of their Suds and Science series. Introduced by Phil Wexler, the program featured Roger Clemens and Claire Kruger in an evening devoted to food safety and toxicology. Another eager to learn overflow crowd participated in a highly stimulating and interactive discussion over food and beer. Both these programs, which drew some 50 attendees each, speak to the need for toxicologists to get out into the community, actively engage the public, listen to their concerns and explain science in an intelligible, entertaining, and peer to peer fashion.
