Matching Funding Requests for 2018 Summer Undergraduate Internships Due January 5

By Deb or DJ Hoivik posted 12-21-2017 03:00 PM

Society of Toxicology (SOT) members at academic, industry, and government facilities can apply for matching funds from SOT to support undergraduate research interns during summer 2018. SOT strongly supports the recruitment of undergraduates to toxicology and this is one mechanism. Research experience in the discipline is one of the best ways to encourage students to pursue graduate training and ultimately careers in toxicology.

Interns at Rutgers included Ricardo Navarro and Kristal Reyes Sanchez. They were mentored by Jeffrey Laskin and Suzie Chen, respectively

The application for funding is now available at Internship Program Support. The deadline for submission of materials is January 5. SOT provides 50% of the support for each intern. The students funded by SOT must be engaged in toxicology research with a mentor who is an SOT member. The host institution determines the selection procedures and defines the research program. The applicant provides a description of activities that support strong mentorship, seminar and presentation experience, peer group structure, the assessment plan, and other aspects that provide an excellent experience for the student.

We encourage hosts to consider students who have been selected for other SOT programs such as the Undergraduate Diversity Program. It is anticipated that SOT-supported interns will submit an abstract for the next SOT Annual Meeting and apply for any SOT travel awards for which they are eligible if they are able to collect sufficient data during the internship.

Help us inform undergraduates about internship opportunities in toxicology! SOT also maintains a listing of internship opportunities on the SOT website. Whether or not a program applies for SOT Intern funding, please send information about toxicology-related internship experiences in academia, government, and industry to bettye@toxicology.org for inclusion in the listing.
