Colgate-Palmolive Award for Student Research Training in Alternative Methods and Postdoctoral Fellowship Award in In Vitro Toxicology
Colgate-Palmolive has been supporting Society of Toxicology (SOT) Awards dedicated to the development of alternative testing methods that reduce, replace, or refine the use of animals in toxicological research since 1988.
SOT Colgate-Palmolive-supported Award recipients are as follows:
- Peer Karmaus, PhD, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, who is being honored with the 2017 SOT Colgate-Palmolive Postdoctoral Fellowship Award in In Vitro Toxicology. This award of up to $44,000 is designed to help postdoctoral trainees advance the development of alternatives to animal testing in toxicological research.
- Emily Martell, BS, University of Rhode Island, Ashaway, Rhode Island, is being awarded a 2017 SOT Colgate-Palmolive Award for Student Research Training in Alternative Methods. This award provides students with a stipend of up to $3,750 to defray travel, per diem, training expenses, and research costs as well as the opportunity to receive training using in vitro methods or alternative techniques to reduce, replace, or refine the use of animals in toxicological research.
Syngenta Fellowship Award in Human Health Applications of New Technologies
The SOT Awards Committee has named Fabian Grimm, PhD, Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, as the 2017 SOT Syngenta Fellowship Award Recipient in Human Health Applications of New Technologies. This award provides mode-of-action research funding to a third-year (or later) graduate student or postdoctoral trainee. The funding is intended to support mode-of-action research aimed at characterizing dose-dependent effects of xenobiotics on mammalian systems in such a way that the causal sequence of key events underlying toxicity is elucidated.
The work should permit a quantitative basis for extrapolation of the results from animal bioassays or animal models (in silico, in vitro) to humans at relevant human doses. The award consists of $15,000 in fellowship funds as well as travel to the SOT Annual Meeting to accept the award and travel to a Syngenta site to present the results.
SOT Graduate Student Travel Support
This year 80 graduate students will receive Graduate Student Travel Support to attend the SOT 56th Annual Meeting in Baltimore, Maryland. SOT Graduate Travel Support is provided, in part, with generous contributions from the SOT Endowment Fund.
