By Laurie Haws posted 11-21-2019 15:12

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released a draft “NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing,” as well as a supplemental draft guidance. The draft policy is meant to encompass all research funded or conducted by NIH: “Under this Policy, individuals and entities would be required to provide a Data Management and Sharing Plan (Plan) describing how scientific data will be managed, including when and where the scientific data will be preserved and shared, prior to initiating the research study. Shared data should be made accessible in a timely manner for use by the research community and the broader public. This Policy is intended to establish expectations for Data Management and Sharing Plans upon which other NIH Institutes, Centers and Offices (ICO) may supplement as appropriate.”

SOT members are encouraged to review the draft policy and to share feedback with NIH by the January 10, 2020, deadline. The draft policy, supplement guidance documents, and information on how to submit comments are available on the NIH website.
