The Career Advancement, Mentoring, and Networking (CAMAN) Committee is offering a webinar “Applying SOT Mentorship Tools for Regional Chapter Meetings” to focus on tools that facilitate mentoring. Although focused on Regional Chapter (RC) activities, anyone interested in strengthening mentoring is invited to participate.

SOT has 18 Regional Chapters (RCs) that span across the United States. RCs are a great resource for toxicologists and related communities to stay connected on a local level, engaging in regional topics of interest, highlighting outstanding local science, and helping members to expand their professional networks. RCs often have an annual meeting that is developed and hosted by their RC executive committee, and these meetings offer an opportunity to connect with students, trainees, and career scientists on a smaller scale than the national conference and typically without a major travel burden. As such, the RC annual meetings are uniquely positioned to have flexibility in building mentoring programs to facilitate connection for those interested in participating at any stage in their careers. Likewise, RC meetings also draw in local scientists who may not regularly attend the SOT meeting, diversifying opportunities to connect with toxicologists.

The goals of this webinar are to:

1. Introduce and demonstrate tools available through SOT that can be leveraged to help in building mentoring relationships at all career levels. These resources can be implemented across RCs (e.g., Mentor Match).

2. Highlight successful networking events within RCs used to connect individuals who wish to build a mentoring relationship. Regional Chapters hold successful networking events and mentorship programs.

3. Share ideas to overcome challenges faced by Regional Chapters in the facilitation of mentorship (e.g., cost effective tools, how to connect in a Regional Chapter that is large geographically).

The webinar will be moderated by Gina Hilton and Courtney McGinnis. Panelists include Kari Sant (CAMAN), AtLee Watson (North Carolina RC), Natalie Johnson (Lone Star RC), and Joshua Gray (Northeast RC). Each will provide examples of their RC activities and provide their perspective about deepening interactions to create mentoring relationships.

This webinar will provide ideas about the types of RC mentoring programs currently being done around SOT, as well as new strategies for developing successful or improved RC mentoring programs.
