A Joint SOT Exposure Specialty Section & Society for Risk Analysis Exposure Assessment Specialty Group Webinar
Registration is required for this free webinar
Microplastics are increasingly recognized as complex environmental contaminants with implications for human health, yet key uncertainties remain at the intersection of exposure and hazard. This joint webinar from the Society of Toxicology (SOT) Exposure Specialty Section (ESS) and the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA) Exposure Assessment and Specialty Group (EASG) brings together complementary perspectives to advance an integrated understanding of microplastics risk. The first presentation, from the SRA exposure science perspective, will examine inhalation exposure to microplastics, with a focus on particle deposition in the human lung as a function of particle shape, size, orientation, and polymer type. The second presentation, from the SOT toxicology perspective, will explore potential health hazards associated with micro- and nanoplastics, including systemic vascular and neurological effects and the uncertainties around measurement and exposure assessment due to current technological limitations. Together, these talks highlight how harmonizing exposure characterization with toxicological insight can strengthen risk-relevant interpretations of microplastics and inform future research and assessment strategies.
