Exploring Entrepreneurial Paths Part 3: From Research Insight to Startup Formation

When:  Jan 23, 2026 from 01:00 PM to 02:00 PM (ET)

Registration is required for this free webinar

Hosted by the SOT Postdoctoral Assembly

Building on the first two sessions of the Exploring Entrepreneurial Paths series, this final webinar turns insight into action by offering a step-by-step walkthrough of how researchers can begin transforming scientific discoveries into viable ventures. This is intended to be an interactive webinar, and your participation is encouraged.
While the earlier discussions highlighted scientists who successfully transitioned from bench to business, this session will focus on the how: the practical process of turning research into a company. Drawing from the speaker’s own entrepreneurial journey—from an early, unsuccessful I-Corps biosensor project at UC Riverside to a current venture now poised for an SBIR Phase I award—attendees will gain valuable insights into what it takes to navigate the transition from concept to commercialization.
Topics will include:
  • Collaborating with technology transfer offices and filing provisional patents
  • Navigating prior art and developing an IP strategy
  • Market validation through NSF I-Corps (TAM/SAM/SOM frameworks)
  • Knowing when and how to pivot
  • Leveraging pitch competitions and non-dilutive funding (SBIR/STTR)
  • Preparing for investor and partner conversations
This session emphasizes that entrepreneurship is an iterative process shaped by timing, people, and persistence and will equip attendees with practical strategies, funding pathways, and institutional resources to help them take their first concrete steps. To make the experience more personal, the webinar will feature a curated resource table from the tech transfer offices of some institutions.
