Defining “Normal” in Translational Vision Science: Ophthalmic Reference Ranges in African Green Monk

When:  Apr 21, 2026 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM (ET)

Hosted by the SOT Ocular Toxicology Specialty Section

Nonhuman primates (NHPs) are essential models for ophthalmic research due to their anatomical and physiological similarities to humans. In this seminar we explore the comparison of African green monkeys (AGM) to traditional animal models. We present data supporting that African green monkeys are comparable to macaques in terms of ophthalmic physiology and anatomy. We will discuss the benefits of a species with less genetic variability and lower incidence of confounding infections. We will present normative ophthalmic data for the AGM, common toxicologic ophthalmic responses (such as inflammation) to drugs administered into the eye and compare to cynomolgus monkeys.
