Take a Break and Explore Award-Winning Research from the SOT NAMSS 2025 Winners

When:  Feb 17, 2026 from 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM (ET)

Registration is required for this free webinar

Hosted by the SOT Nanoscience and Advanced Materials Specialty Section

During this webinar, we will hear from our NAMSS SOT 2025 awardees about their outstanding research and advancements in nanotoxicology.

Lila Bazina, a PhD candidate at Rutgers University, will talk about "Emerging Environmental Nanoparticles and Health Implications.” Her talk explores the toxicological impacts of environmentally relevant nanoparticles, focusing on the effects of Canadian wildfire-emitted particulate matter on lung macrophage health and function. It also examines the mechanisms of cellular uptake, translocation, and toxicity of environmentally relevant micro- and nanoplastics using advanced in vitro human intestinal models, highlighting their implications for human health.

Gina Moreno, PhD, will talk about "Method, Characterization, and Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry Modeling of Laboratory Inhalation Exposure for Micro-nanoplastics Particles in Rodents." She will share her study where they used whole body rodent inhalation facility and generated polyamide-12 (PA-12) aerosol and thoroughly characterized the aerosol. PA-12 was measured at three mass concentrations to represent environmental and occupational exposures. Size distributions were measured with a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS), an aerodynamic particle sizer (APS), and a high-resolution electrical low-pressure impactor (HR-ELPI+) over a size range of 10nm-20m. The merged data revealed a bi- and tri-modal particle distribution in nano and micrometer size range. The data were then applied to multiple-path particle dosimetry (MPPD) modeling software to predict particle distribution in Sprague-Dawley rat and human respiratory models. This study provides a method for toxicological impacts of MNP inhalation exposures in silico.
