SOT celebrates recent outstanding contributions to toxicology with two prestigious awards: the SOT Achievement Award and the SOT Leading Edge in Basic Science Award. These honors recognize individuals who have made significant advancements in the field, showcasing excellence in research and scientific innovation.

Achievement Award

SOT honors significant contributions to toxicology through the Achievement Award. This award is presented to an SOT member who, within 15 years of obtaining their highest degree, has made noteworthy contributions to the field. The awardee receives a commemorative plaque during the SOT Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony, accompanied by a cash stipend.

Leading Edge in Basic Science Award

The Leading Edge in Basic Science Award celebrates a scientist (SOT member or nonmember) who has made a recent, seminal scientific contribution to understanding the fundamental mechanisms of toxicity. This award recognizes research conducted within the last five years that has the potential to have a pervasive impact on toxicology. The recipient receives a plaque during the SOT Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony, a cash stipend, and an invitation to deliver the Leading Edge in Basic Science Award Lecture at the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo.

Making a Nomination

Help us celebrate excellence in toxicology by submitting nominations for these awards before the October 9 deadline. Nominations for either award should include both a primary and a secondary letter of nomination from Full members of the Society that provide an analysis of the nominee’s significant contributions to toxicology and how they apply to the award criteria. The strongest nomination packages include two letters that are distinct from one another to offer more detailed support of the candidate’s qualifications. Letters of nomination should be specific and descriptive while remaining concise. The Awards Committee will review only the two letters required to complete the nomination; no additional letters will be considered. The seconding letter can be signed by multiple individuals or even provided on behalf of an SOT Component Group. The individual’s merits will be weighed based on their accomplishments and not the number of letter signatories.

Nominations should also include the nominee’s up-to-date CV, limited to 10 pages, highlighting the candidate’s most significant professional accomplishments as they relate to the criteria for the award. Awards Committee members are required to review only 10 pages of each CV, so submitting a longer CV does not strengthen an award nomination.

For more information on making a nomination, please review the “Awards Review Process and FAQs” web page of the SOT website. Please direct any inquiries to SOT Headquarters.

Celebrate the exceptional contributions of your colleagues by nominating them for the SOT Achievement Award or the Leading Edge in Basic Science Award today.

Please note that to ensure a diversity of nominees, there is a two-year grace period for SOT Awards. Preference will be given to nominees who have not received any of the following SOT Awards in the past two years: Achievement, Arnold J. Lehman, Distinguished Toxicology Scholar, Education, Enhancement of Animal Welfare, Founders, Leading Edge in Basic Science, Merit, Public Communications, Toxicologist Mentoring, Translational Impact, Translational/Bridging Travel, and Undergraduate Educator Awards.
