2022 Annual Meeting Report: Exploring the Impacts of Air Pollution: Display of Diversified Approaches in the 2022 Air Pollution Toxicology Poster Session

More and more evidence is stacking up toward the substantial impact of air pollution on human health. Association has been drawn between disorders of most organ systems, including pulmonary, cardiovascular, neurological, developmental, and immunological. In the face of its all-encompassing reach, better understanding of the impacts of air pollution and studying the underlying methodologies of these impacts has become very important. This led me to take a closer look at the Air Pollution Toxicology I Poster Session, which took place on March 28 during the 2022 SOT Annual Meeting.

Participation in this session was dominated by academic institutions, but there was participation by US EPA and NIEHS as well. The variation in topics addressed by these posters was remarkable—and this variation spanned across pollutants of question, the biological system involved, as well as the model used to study them. While there were posters assessing the impacts of different of air pollutants on different systems, there also were studies looking at compositional characteristics of some of these different pollutants. And then there was a poster looking at the variation of air pollutants in a highway, taking us from our lab benches to the field where this pollution is occurring.

The entire world is slowly coming back to some representation of normal life as it used to be before COVID, and we once again have the chance to participate in meetings in person. It was very nice to be able to walk around, interact with attendees in person, and see a healthy crowd around these posters striking up interesting conversations.
