SOT member Ofelia Olivero and Student member
Marisol Arellano speak with a SACNAS NDiSTEM
attendee about opportunities in toxicology and SOT.
If you are planning on attending the SACNAS National Diversity in STEM (NDiSTEM) Conference in October or Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS) this fall, please let us know! The SOT Committee on Diversity Initiatives (CDI) is looking for SOT members to help us spread information and encourage interest in the science of toxicology, toxicology careers, and SOT, as well as promote student award opportunities, at these conferences.
SACNAS works to make sure that those most underrepresented in STEM have the support they need to attain advanced degrees, careers, and positions of leadership. The NDiSTEM Conference is a yearly multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM diversity event which equips, empowers, and energizes participants for their academic and professional paths in STEM. This year’s NDiSTEM Conference will take place in Portland, Oregon, October 26–28.
ABRCMS, managed by the American Society for Microbiology, was founded to encourage minority, first-generation, veteran, and disabled students to pursue higher education in STEM. For over 20 years, it has been a key conference for underrepresented community college, undergraduate, and postbaccalaureate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This year’s ABRCMS will take place in Phoenix, Arizona, November 15–18.

representing SOT at the 2022 ABRCMS
There are a variety of ways that SOT members can help to promote toxicology at these conferences:
- Submit an ABRCMS session proposal by July 10, 2023. ABCRMS session proposals are research focused. SOT can provide you with a slide to add to your presentation about our opportunities for students.
- Volunteer to serve as a poster judge or award reviewer at NDiSTEM or ABRCMS.
- If you will be attending one of the conferences, SOT can mail you copies of a student opportunities flyer to share at the conferences and email an electronic copy of talking points about opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in toxicology.
- The deadline has passed to submit a SACNAS symposium proposal for this year’s conference but keep an eye out for the submission proposal window for 2024. SACNAS symposiums tend to be focused on career development.
SOT is pausing exhibiting at NDiSTEM and ABRCMS for 2023, so we are looking to connect with SOT members to help to continue to have a toxicology presence at these conferences. If you are planning to attend either conference, please contact the SOT CDI staff liaison Jenna Hartsell.
