The SOT Committee on Diversity Initiatives (CDI) would like to thank the SOT members who volunteered to share information about opportunities in toxicology and SOT resources and awards for students at the 2023 Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) National Diversity in STEM Conference (NDiSTEM) and the 2023 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Scientists (ABRCMS).

SACNAS hosted its 2023 NDiSTEM conference in Portland, Oregon, October 26–28. The SACNAS NDiSTEM conference is the largest multidisciplinary and multicultural STEM conference for students and postdocs. SOT members David Blake, PhD; John Richburg, PhD; Catherine Rojas, BS; and Susan Tilton, PhD, attended the conference and shared information about SOT and toxicology with students at their booths and during the Conversations with Scientists event.

The 2023 ABRCMS meeting was held in Phoenix, Arizona, November 1518. It has become a go-to conference for students in STEM from underrepresented backgrounds. SOT members John Richburg, PhD; Checo Rorie, PhD; Patricia Silveyra, PhD; and Hollie Swanson, PhD, attended and helped to spread the word about SOT resources, awards, and opportunities.

SOT also appreciates the assistance of Jaclyn Canas, Fidel Rivas, Marlene Garcia, and Katie Traughber who helped distribute SOT materials at these conferences.

Overall, the SACNAS NDiSTEM and ABRCMS meetings are unique and rewarding opportunities to introduce students from around the United States to toxicological research and careers. They also provide venues for participants of the SOT Undergraduate Diversity Program to reconnect with one another and with SOT. CDI again thanks the volunteers who helped to raise the visibility of SOT and toxicology at these meetings.

If you plan to attend the 2024 SACNAS NDiSTEM conference in Phoenix, Arizona, next October or the 2024 ABRCMS meeting in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, next November, let Jenna Pelsey know so that CDI can connect with you ahead of time! In addition to sharing materials, SOT members can submit session proposals and serve as poster judges as ways to increase the visibility of toxicology at these meetings.
