SOT and Toxicological Sciences, the Society’s official journal, have been fortunate to have Jeffrey Peters as the Editor-in-Chief for the past six years. We thank him for his service and dedication and respect his decision to step down in June 2026 due to professional commitments.

In light of this decision, SOT will be conducting a search for the next Editor-in-Chief in the coming months.

The mission of Toxicological Sciences (ToxSci) is to publish a broad spectrum of impactful research in the field of toxicology. While the primary focus of ToxSciis on original research articles, the journal also provides expert insight via contemporary, in-depth, and systematic reviews, as well as forum articles and editorial content that addresses important topics in the field. The Editor-in-Chief is expected to fulfill the journal’s mission with the highest level of integrity, scientific judgment, and professionalism.

Regarding the duties expected of the Editor-in-Chief, they will:

  • Provide scientific editorial leadership and strategic vision for the journal

  • Serve as the primary coordinator of interactions among authors of submitted manuscripts, the publisher Oxford University Press (OUP), Associate Editors, members of the Editorial Board, and other peer reviewers

  • Work with the Managing Editor, who handles administrative, clerical, and nonscientific duties related to the journal

Beyond the qualifications already mentioned, candidates must have strong credentials in toxicology and be an SOT member at the time they accept the office.

The Editor-in-Chief is provided with a budget from SOT for expenses related to editorial activities. Limited financial compensation may be available for the Editor-in-Chief.

To be considered for this important position, individuals should prepare:

  • A letter stating their interest in the Toxicological Sciences Editor-in-Chief position

  • A brief statement of their editorial philosophy and goals for Toxicological Sciences

  • A sample editorial

  • A curriculum vitae

These materials should be submitted to Dr. Barbara Kaplan, BOP Chair, c/o Kevin Merritt. The review process will begin February 2026, and applications will be considered until a new Editor-in-Chief has been identified. Interviews will be scheduled in March for selected candidates.
