As we near the end of the first year of our new Strategic Plan, I wanted to take a moment to highlight one of the plan’s core elements: the Foundational Priority. The Foundational Priority (i.e., the principle that all other priorities and objectives should build upon) is to “foster a welcoming, diverse, inclusive culture.”
At SOT, this commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is vital for ensuring our scientific community is enriched by varied perspectives. With initiatives aimed at enhancing representation across gender, race, nationality, and experience, among others, SOT strives to create a supportive environment where every member has equitable access to opportunities that promote success, acquisition of knowledge, and the potential for growth during all training and career stages. This includes Special Interest Groups and awards to uplift underrepresented and diverse communities. Together, these initiatives build a more inclusive culture in toxicology, driven by our values of respect, equity, and accountability.
One of the first changes brought about by the new Strategic Plan was the realignment of three essential SOT Committees that resulted in the creation of the Career Advancement, Mentoring, and Networking Committee; the Education and Experiential Opportunities Committee; and the Inclusion, Diversity, and Engagement Committee. This realignment helps each group focus on the existing and new activities and programs that provide strong opportunities for SOT members to succeed, gain knowledge, and grow personally and professionally throughout their career—from introductory training to retirement.
We are excited to see the new initiatives emerge and how they continue to evolve existing programs and strengthen the longstanding foundation of the Society.
If you would like to contribute to the current and future DEIA and other initiatives, you can express your interest via the Volunteer Module or by nominating yourself for a leadership position within one of the SOT Regional Chapters, Special Interest Groups, or Specialty Sections. These groups are actively seeking nominees now for terms that will start next year.
