Attending the 2025 National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) Annual Conference in Boston was a memorable experience. As a first-time visitor to the city, I took full advantage of the opportunity to explore its rich history and vibrant academic scene before the conference began. Walking through Harvard’s iconic campus and taking in MIT’s mix of modern and classic architecture was both inspiring and humbling. Boston Common offered a quiet respite from the city’s energy, a perfect place to unwind, reflect, and look forward to the days ahead.

At the conference, I had the privilege of representing the SOT Postdoctoral Assembly (PDA) and presenting a poster on our efforts to enhance postdoctoral experience. From mentorship programs to career development resources, the SOT PDA is focused on helping postdoctoral associates thrive—and it was incredibly rewarding to see how our efforts resonated with attendees from diverse backgrounds. The conversations that followed were thoughtful and energizing, and it was clear that many of us are facing similar challenges and searching for better ways forward.

Two sessions in particular really stood out. One on science policy opened my eyes to how researchers can play a role in shaping policy and advocating for science outside the lab. It was empowering to hear that our voices, as scientists, matter in those spaces. Another session on salary negotiations was equally eye-opening. It gave me practical tools and the confidence to approach these conversations with a clearer understanding of my value and how to communicate it—something I know will serve me well in the future.

What made the whole experience even more meaningful was the sense of community. Meeting fellow postdocs from across the country, swapping stories, sharing advice, and just connecting over shared experiences reminded me that we’re all in this together. That sense of belonging made a big conference feel personal and supportive.

Participating in the conference also gave me time to reflect on my own career path and goals. Hearing from seasoned professionals who once stood where I am now was both reassuring and motivating. Their stories reminded me that the postdoc stage, while sometimes challenging, is also a unique period of growth and possibility.

Looking back, the NPA Conference was more than a professional development opportunity—it was a chance to grow, connect, and be inspired. From the sessions to the city itself, everything about it left a lasting impression. If you ever have the chance to attend, I highly recommend it. You’ll walk away not just with new knowledge but with new energy and a more profound sense of connection to the postdoc community.
