Undergraduate research participation is often cited as an experience that propels students to graduate school, so SOT invests in increasing the number of internships in toxicology. Internship Program Support applications for 2024 funding are due January 8, so consider starting the draft as one of your pre-holiday activities.

We welcome applications from SOT members who might be initiating an internship as well as from those with established programs. These internships should take place between May and August 2024. Applicants may request up to $4,000 per student and funding for up to three students for a maximum of $12,000 per institution.

Those receiving the funding will use their own selection process for the interns who are designated for SOT support, but we anticipate that recruitment will include efforts to reach students who are typically underrepresented in the science and students who are likely candidates for graduate school in toxicology. The students supported by SOT funds will be mentored by an SOT member and work on toxicology projects. Other elements important in the application review include demonstration of strong mentorship during the program; well-defined program structure, including aspects that have been demonstrated as important for early career researchers; and an evaluation plan with follow up with the students after the internship.

Applications from small and large academic institutions, government research labs, and industry are welcome.

SOT provided support for 24 students at nine institutions in 2023. We will see many of these students presenting posters at the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo in March.
