Around the World of Toxicology: April 2023 Partner Activities Update

Each month, SOT provides an update on activities and events of importance to through the release of the this “Around the World of Toxicology” blog. To submit an event, opportunity, or information for consideration for inclusion in the monthly “Around the World of Toxicology” blog, complete the special submission form for “Around the World of Toxicology” items. Please note that only activities by societies and professional associations (i.e., nonprofits) will be considered. If you are an organization or company seeking to promote an event, please submit your activity to the SOT “Calendar of Events.”

American Academy of Clinical Toxicology (AACT)

Abstract submissions are open for the 2023 North American Congress of Clinical Toxicology (NACCT 2023), taking place September 29–October 1 in Montréal, Québec, Canada. The abstract submission deadline is May 8.

AACT also is seeking members to run for the AACT Board of Trustees. The upcoming election will fill the role of Secretary and four Trustee positions. Interested individuals should submit their CV and letter of interest by June 30.

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

On May 2, AAAS is hosting a webinar titled “First National Primary Drinking Water Standards for Six PFAS.” This webinar features two SOT members, Jamie DeWitt of East Carolina University and Linda Birnbaum of NIEHS and Duke University, as panelists. The webinar is free to attend.

American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT)

ACMT is soliciting proposals for plenary sessions, panels, professional development opportunities, and workshops for the 2024 ACMT Annual Scientific Meeting that will be held April 12–14, 2024, in Washington, DC. Topics of particular interest to the 2024 meeting organizers are diversity, equity, and inclusion within medical toxicology; occupational and environmental toxicology; toxicology and public health, and toxicology in the news (MedTox and current events). Proposals are due May 5.

Americans for Medical Progress (AMP)

AMP is hosting a webinar on May 2 titled “Post-COVID Challenges, Hurdles and Solutions in Lab Animal Care Settings.” After a panel discussion with senior lab animal experts, audience members will be invited to share their experiences and ideas.

EUROTOX

EUROTOX has extended the abstract submission deadline for EUROTOX 2023 to April 17. Also, the early-bird registration deadline for the Congress is May 15.

International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX)

The next IUTOXtalks webinar is being held May 24 at 8:00 am (US EDT, UTC -4). It will feature Mathieu Vinken, PhD, PharmD, ERT, speaking about “Adverse Outcome Pathways as the Basis for In Vitro Prediction of Chemical-Induced Liver Toxicity.”

IUTOX and the Sociedad de Toxicologia de Chile are soliciting proposals for scientific sessions, symposia, workshops, and keynotes for the 12th Congress of Toxicology in Developing Countries (CTDCXII). The Congress is taking place April 15–18, 2024, at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Santiago, Chile. Proposal submissions are due May 31.

Japanese Society of Toxicology (JSOT)

JSOT has extended the abstract submission deadline for JSOT 2023 to April 17. This year marks the 50th anniversary of JSOT Annual Meeting, which will take place June 19–21 at the Pacifico Yokohama in Yokohama, Japan. Also, the pre-registration (i.e., early bird) deadline for the meeting is April 19.

National Association for Biomedical Research (NABR)

NABR is hosting a webinar on April 25 titled “Why IACUCs Are Not—And Should Not Be Allowed to Become—Ethics Committees.” With some groups advocating that institutional animal care and use committees (IACUCs) should assess the ethical appropriateness of animal research projects, this webinar “will explore why turning IACUCs into ethics committees would make it impossible for IACUCs to do what they do best, would impede serious consideration of ethical issues in animal research, and would threaten continuing progress in animal research itself.”

National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)

NIEHS is working on its strategic plan for 2024–2028 and is requesting stakeholder input. Specifically, NIEHS is looking for “comments on current goals we should retain or discard, gaps in the original scope we should address, new trends or topics from the last five years, or anything else you might care to comment on, related to environmental health sciences.” Comments are due April 20, 2023.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) Board of Scientific Counselors is holding a public meeting via webcast on May 4. The main agenda topic is a working group report on a draft “State of the Science Monograph” and “Meta-Analysis Manuscript” of the neurobehavioral health effects from exposure to fluoride during development. The deadline for submitting written or oral comments is April 28.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

NIOSH recently published its American Indian and Alaska Native Worker Safety and Health Strategic Plan. The 10-year plan contains research, information, and actions needed to help prevent injuries, illnesses, and fatalities among American Indian and Alaska Native workers.

US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA)

The US FDA is hosting a two-day workshop April 20–21 on “Considerations for and Alternatives to Comparative Clinical Endpoint and Pharmacodynamic Bioequivalence Studies for Generic Orally Inhaled Drug Products.” This workshop can be attended in person at the Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland, as well as virtually. There is a $425 fee to attend in person.

The US FDA Blood Products Advisory Committee is meeting on April 26. The agenda for the meeting includes an overview of the research programs in the Division of Hemostasis, Office of Plasma Protein Therapeutics Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls, Office of Therapeutic Products, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. Oral and written comments are due April 25.
