Around the World of Toxicology: December 2023 Partner Activities Update

Each month, SOT provides an update on activities and events of importance to the toxicology community through the release of the “Around the World of Toxicology” blog. To submit an event, opportunity, or information for consideration for inclusion in the monthly “Around the World of Toxicology” blog, complete the special submission form for “Around the World of Toxicology” items. Please note that only activities by societies and professional associations (i.e., nonprofits) will be considered. If you are an organization or company seeking to promote an event, please submit your activity to the SOT “Calendar of Events.”

 

Reminders of Upcoming, Previously Featured Deadlines and Activities

  • ACMT and the Center for Forensic Science Research and Education are hosting a two-day virtual seminar titled “Expanding Worlds of Cannabinoids & Polydrug Exposures” on December 14 and 15.
  • The abstract submission and early-bird registration deadlines for the 12th Congress of Toxicology in Developing Countries, taking place April 15–18, 2024, in Santiago, Chile, have been extended to December 30, 2023. This event is being hosted by the Sociedad de Toxicología de Chile and the International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX).

 

Activity Announcements, Updates, and Opportunities

American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS)

AAAS has released the program for its 2024 Annual Meeting, which is taking place in Denver, Colorado, February 15–17. The theme for the upcoming event is “Toward Science without Walls,” and the advance registration deadline is January 25.

Applications are currently open for the AAAS and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) Course on Diplomacy. This AAAS/TWAS course is designed “to strengthen the connection between scientists and governmental officials, policymakers and diplomats.” Individuals must apply in applicant pairs consisting of an early career scientist and a policymaker. The 2024 course is taking place in Trieste, Italy, June 17–21, and applications are due February 5.

Americans for Medical Progress (AMP)

On December 15, AMP is hosting a webinar titled “Identifying Upcoming Animal Rights Challenges in Order to Prepare, Limit Impacts.” This webinar is free for individuals registering with a company or university email address.

Federation of European Toxicologists and European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX)

EUROTOX is currently soliciting nominations for many of its programs. First are the 2024 EUROTOX Merit Award and 2024 EUROTOX Lecture, which recognize a distinguished career in European toxicology and scientific excellence in toxicological sciences, respectively. The nomination deadline is January 31, 2024. Nominations also are due January 31 for individuals to serve on the EUROTOX Nominating Committee (responsible for proposing candidates to run for the Executive Committee) and the EUROTOX Communication and Registration Subcommittees. Finally, nominations for individuals to run for treasurer or members of the EUROTOX Executive Committee are due April 1, 2024.

International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX)

In the latest IUTOX President’s Message, José Manautou—who also is an SOT member—shares updates on (1) the IUTOX partnership with Current Opinions in Toxicology and a special issue that is underway, (2) the next IUTOX Risk Assessment Summer School that will be held in November 2024 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, (3) his activities with the Serbian Society of Toxicology and the SOT Global Senior Scholar Program; and (4) the upcoming 12th IUTOX Congress of Toxicology in Developing Countries (CTDC12), including that the preliminary scientific program has been finalized.

The 2024 NPA Annual Conference is taking place in Seattle, Washington, March 15 and 16. The early-bird registration deadline is December 15.

US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA)

On December 12 and 13, the US FDA is hosting a two-part webinar titled “Navigating Complex Waters: A Deep Dive into FDA Drug Interactions Guidances and Resources.” Each two-hour webinar is eligible for two hours of continuing education for physicians, pharmacists, and nurses.

The next US FDA Grand Rounds webcast is on December 14, and the topic is “FDA Approach to the Safety Assessment of Food Ingredients.” During the virtual event, case studies involving aspartame and brominated vegetable oil will be discussed.
