2023 Annual Meeting Report: 11th Annual Tox ShowDown: What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger!

By Margaret Whittaker posted 04-20-2023 03:57 PM

SOT Vice President-Elect extraordinaire Cynthia Rider emceed the 11th annual Tox ShowDown for a night of laughs and carefully titrated libations as part of SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo festivities. The Endocrine Disruptors, the Free Radicals, and the Toxic Metabolites competed head-to-head to answer very challenging questions designed to shake out any hidden (or misplaced) piece of toxicological trivia acquired while studying for the DABT exam, writing a grad school thesis or dissertation, or streaming a favorite crime show.

The Free Radicals Team—comprising Celeste Carberry, Brian Hughes, and Colleen McLoughlinprevailed over the Endocrine Disruptors (Prathyusha Bagam, Anastasia Freedman, and Brent Gilbert) and Toxic Metabolites (Kristin Eccles, Jennifer Larson-Casey, and Jim Luyendyk) by sagely answering (or guessing!) answers throughout the Tox ShowDown. The Tox ShowDown champions flexed their toxicity muscles over the course of the evening, as exampled by their ability to correctly match ingredients of Elvis Presley’s favorite peanut butter, banana, bacon sandwich snack to specific allergies such as celiac disease (wheat), anaphylaxis (peanuts), and alpha-gal syndrome (bacon).

For those of you not able to attend the Tox ShowDown at this year’s Annual Meeting, I challenge you to try answering the following Tox ShowDown quiz to see if you have what it takes to be part of next year’s Tox ShowDown at the SOT Annual Meeting and ToxExpo in Salt Lake City, Utah!
